Japan's Takaichi presses central bank to buy more bonds - upi
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has reportedly pressed the Bank of Japan to increase its government bond purchases, according to UPI. The move puts fresh attention on the relationship between fiscal policy and monetary policy in the world's fourth-largest economy, and on how much room the central bank has to adjust its bond-buying operations.
The Bank of Japan has long used large-scale bond purchases as a core tool of its ultra-loose monetary stance, and any signal that political pressure could push purchases higher matters for global markets. Japanese government bond yields are a reference point for borrowing costs worldwide, and shifts in expectations around BOJ policy can influence the yen and cross-border capital flows.
What to watch: the BOJ's next policy statements and bond-operation plans, any official response to the prime minister's request, and movements in JGB yields and the yen. Investors should note that political commentary does not by itself change policy — the central bank sets its own course — but it can shape how markets price the path ahead.
