France's 31.4% Crypto Tax Could Hit Stablecoin Swaps - Altcoin Buzz

France has moved to close what it viewed as a loophole in its tax treatment of digital assets. Under the reported framework, crypto-to-crypto transactions — including swaps between stablecoins and other tokens — could face a flat 31.4% levy, a rate that aligns with France's existing flat tax on capital gains from crypto disposals. The key change is that exchanges between digital assets may no longer be treated as tax-neutral events.
The market relevance is straightforward: stablecoins are widely used as a settlement layer and a parking spot for trading capital. If each conversion into or out of a stablecoin becomes a taxable event, the cost of routine portfolio adjustments rises, which could reduce trading frequency and push some activity toward friendlier jurisdictions. It also adds a compliance burden, since users would need to track cost basis on transactions that previously generated no tax bill.
What to watch: whether the measure is confirmed in final legislation, how it defines a taxable swap, and whether other EU states follow. For now, it is a reminder that tax treatment — not just price — shapes how digital assets are used.
