BlackRock now has assets equal to half the size of the U.S. economy after 15% growth

BlackRock ended its latest reporting period with assets under management of nearly $15.5 trillion, following growth of 15%. That figure is striking when set against the roughly $30 trillion size of the U.S. economy: the world's largest asset manager now oversees client money equivalent to about half of annual U.S. economic output.

The comparison is illustrative rather than literal. Assets under management reflect the market value of investments BlackRock administers for clients, not its own revenue or the firm's contribution to GDP. Market gains can lift that total without any new money arriving, while client withdrawals or falling prices can shrink it just as quickly.

What to watch is the mix behind the headline number. Growth driven by rising markets says something different about investor demand than growth from fresh inflows, and the balance between index funds, active strategies and private-market vehicles shapes the firm's fee profile. For markets broadly, BlackRock's scale makes its fund flows and product decisions a useful gauge of where institutional and retail money is heading.
